Shrine
of Hathor
The shrine of Hathor in Timna was constructed at the foot of "Solomon's
Pillars" at the end of the fourteenth century BCE, during the reign
of Seti I.
Hathor was one of the most ancient of the goddesses and was known by
many names: Goddess of the Mines, The Eye of Ra, Lady of the Hawk, Goddess
of Turquoise, and Goddess of Love, Mirth, and Joy are just a few of
these names.
The dimensions of the original shrine were 15 meters by 15 meters,
and it was faced with white sandstone that was found only at the mining
site, several kilometers away.
An Egyptian rock carving, showing Ramses III with the goddess, can
be seen at the top of steps built beside the shrine.
